It’s an open casting call Australia wide. They are doing it this way as they really would like to find some fresh new faces. This is an amazing opportunity to be involved with some great actors and work with a brilliant director.
MENTAL Synopsis:
The Moochmore girls are certain they all suffer from some kind of undiagnosed mental illness – because if they’re not crazy then they’re just unpopular. Their mother Shirley – unable to cope with her demanding daughters and unsupported by her philandering politician husband, Barry – suffers a nervous breakdown. After Barry commits his wife to a mental hospital (telling his constituents that “she’s on holiday”) he finds himself alone with 5 teenage girls he barely knows. Desperate, he impulsively picks up a hitchhiker named Shaz and installs her in his home as nanny to his daughters. Shaz is charismatic, hot-tempered, inspiring and completely crazy. She transforms the girls -especially the oldest, 16 year old Coral. The Moochmore girls go from being the town’s biggest jokes to becoming forces to be reckoned with. Shaz even springs Shirley from the mental hospital and forces Barry to face up to his family responsibilities. But Shaz has a secret. And it involves Coral’s boss, shark hunter, Trevor Blundell. As Coral discovers the real reason for Shaz’s visit to the town of Dolphin Heads, she must make a terrible decision: fulfill her moral obligation and follow Shaz into complete madness… or betray the woman who changed her life.
We are looking for 5 teenage girls (between 12 – 17yrs) to play the Moochmore sisters in the upcoming feature film: MENTAL.
Directed by PJ Hogan (MURIEL’S WEDDING, MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING, PETER PAN, CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC) and staring Academy Award nominated actress Toni Collette (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, MURIEL’S WEDDING, THE SIXTH SENSE).
We are inviting girls who fit the above-mentioned age group (12 – 17yrs) to visit the website below and take a look at the individual character descriptions. They can download the audition monologues and decide which role is most appropriate for them. It is probably best for them to stick to the age group that’s closest to them.
Step-by-step instructions (including preparation, filming and uploading) will be downloaded with the monologues. (Please note there is a 50MB size limit for the audition clips)
The key here is to keep the auditions quite simple and very natural in performance. The monologues are in a video-diary style, so it should be as easy as grabbing the family digital camera and following the instructions.
Parental / guardian permission is of course required, and the site will prompt their contact details when logging in to upload an audition.
It would be great to receive the auditions sooner rather than later, but the absolute cut-off date is the 30th April 2011.
